The Role of Dentists and Hygienists in Collaborative Care of Sleep Apnea

Sleep apnea is a life-threatening condition, from which 18 million Americans suffer and the numbers are rising at an alarming rate. A remarkable 85% of sleep apnea sufferers go undiagnosed. Dentists and Hygienists are the first line of defense in screening and diagnosis. Working collaboratively with medical colleagues, dentists and hygienists are able to treat this disease. Dr. Parmar will discuss a dentist's and hygienist's role in screening and treating snoring and sleep apnea.
At the completion of the course, participants should have the knowledge and ability to meet the following:
· Understand sleep and the importance of sleep to a patient’s well-being
· Learn what is sleep apnea
· Identify the types of sleep apnea
· Recognize signs and symptoms of sleep apnea
· How to diagnose sleep apnea

Dr. Rashmi Parmar received her professional D.M.D. degree from the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine. She completed the comprehensive general practice residency at the Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, NC, and has been practicing for over 25 years. In addition to private dental practice in Clarksville, Maryland, Dr. Parmar is has lectured and published at length on Dental Sleep Medicine. She is a member of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine, and Maryland Sleep Society.
